When it comes down to buying a new top-of-the-line graphics card, you pretty much have two options: ATI 4870X2 or Nvidia GTX 295. The Nvidia GTX 295 is the surefire winner between these two, as benchmark after benchmark it outperforms the ATI. Also worth mentioning, the ATI has severe driver issues, and runs extremely hot. The GTX 295 provides amazing graphics (better than two GTX 280's or even 2 GTX 285's,) runs cool (about 55 C under full load with stock cooling no overclocking,) EVGA is one of the best manufacturers (they offer mod-friendly warranties and a 30-day upgrade grace period,) and with the latest drivers runs no problems. If you're going to spend hundreds of dollars for top-notch computer parts, you're going to want them to work without waiting for months for decent drivers and the GTX 295 delivers. Just be aware, if you're using two of these in Quad-SLI, be aware that you will NOT be able to run dual monitors with XP.

AMD proved dominant in the high end graphics card market for virtually the entirety of 2008 with a lineup that included the excellent HD4850, HD4870, and the HD4870X2 respectively. Nvidia even had to lower their price points on their GTX260 and GTX280 cards to compete with the cheaper and at time more powerful 48XX series cards. Now, early in 2009, it seems that Nvidia is seriously fighting back and offering the GTX295. Essentially a 1 card SLI option (two GPUs in one card, just like the HD4870X2), the 295GTX is the fastest SINGLE CARD option on the planet, as of April 2009.The real difference between this card and two 280GTXs in SLI formation is that the GPUs share a high bandwidth native connection which allows them to function even in a MB (mother board) without multiple PCIE 16X rails which SLI requires. While most people dropping this kind of money on a graphics card probably have 2-3 16x rails on their MB anyway, it does make the card even more appealing to the general market place who might have an older MB but want cutting edge graphic performance. It is a truism that graphics performance will always be most affected by the GPU not the CPU or even RAM.Strangely, this card has roughly the same memory bandwidth as 2 260 cards, but the processing power of two 280 cards meaning at first glance it appears to be a bit of a hybrid between the two previous Nvidia offerings. Also strange is that Nvidia elected to produce these cards using older GDDR3 memory instead of the faster GDDR5 memory found in both Nvidia's previous top-dog the GTX285 as well as ATI's HD4870 series cards.All that said, this card does offer about a 10% performance gain over the HD4870X2 as well as the GTX285. Is that gain worth the price? Possibly. However, I think it's very likely that Nvidia will soon release a GTX305 (or what ever they decide to name it) that will be a dual GPU card like this one, but that includes GDDR5 memory with its faster speeds. That card will immediately supplant this one as fastest, and will probably beat it by another 10-15% performance, meaning that if you wait a few months, you can get that newer faster card. However, by then there will be something else slick coming down the pipe from Nvidia or ATI and you could wait for that card, and on and on and on...Bottom line: Right now this is THE FASTEST single card option on the market. If you want the fastest, this is it, and if you have the cash, you can't go wrong with this beast.

Pros: Simply the best performing card on the planet. It's a monster. Ability to run QUAD SLI!Cons: High performance equals high price. Runs a little hot, but not bad.If you're looking for the best graphics card available, do the research. It will point you directly to the GTX 295. EVGA should give you peace of mind to spend the dough this bad boy is gonna cost.
