I use After Effects and Premiere Pro and mostly render to H.264. In terms of render, this card has cut about 40% off my render times (admittedly with their "fast" quality settings) and even nicer, it speeds up applying effects -- I had a 30 second clip that took an hour to run through a denoiser. With the Matrox board I could render a denoised version in 12 minutes. Cool.

I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 (2 x Dual Core 2.66 GHz) running on a Crucial M4 Solid State Drive and ATI Radeon 4870 video card. The machine is very very snappy in spite of its age. The only draw back is when I have to encode videos on the machine. The Mac Pro runs Final Cut Pro X and Compressor with very good response time, but encoding H.264 video files brings the machine to its knees. The CompressHD card accelerates the encodes by 5.5 times; a 9 minute long 1080p 30fps 12Mbps file encode went from 3.5 hours to 38 minutes. According to Geekbench, a 2012 12-core MacPro is only slightly more than 4 times the performance of my 2006 MacPro, it's definitely cheaper for me to upgrade my antique with this card than to invest in a $3800 12 core machine. Obviously, folks with newer machines will not experience the same performance bump, so your mileage may differ.As for the encoding quality, the CompressHD is definitely better than the Apple Quick Time encode engine. Files come out clean with little artifacts, even for files encoded at lower speed for web streaming purpose.

If you have a modern machine, it's faster to export as ProRes and then use handbrake. Would be nice if they kept the card up to date in terms of speed. Hard to best handbrake though.
