3OK graphics card; struggles with 1080p mkv
By Ramkumar Balaraman
I bought this for a 4-year-old Gateway PC (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+/4GB DDR2 RAM). I earlier had a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO graphics card in the PC, with the DVI hooked up to my 1080p monitor and the VGA hooked up to my 1080p HDTV. While image quality was pretty good on both, there was very noticeable frame-slicing when watching high-def content using VLC on my HDTV. My earlier SDTV did not have this issue when I had it hooked up to the s-video port on the graphics card. Obviously the ATI card was no match for 2 1080p displays (in extended desktop mode). Not surprising, since the card is at least 3 years old and was entry level even back then. This GT 520 is entry level as well, but also draws very low power (29W), which is important since I don't plan to upgrade the 300W stock PSU on my PC. I was happy to note that it drives both my displays (monitor and TV) with ease, and I can happily browse on the monitor while the TV is playing 720p MKV files without any frame-slicing. However 1080P MKV files don't play as smoothly. There is no frame-slicing, but frames get noticeably skipped every few seconds as the video struggles to keep up with the audio. Most of my content is 720p, but I was hoping to be future-proof a few more years. My windows experience index went up from 3.0 to 4.9, but graphics is still the lowest sub-score.Other issues:1. VGA is automatically treated as secondary to HDMI during boot, so the boot-up display was always going to my TV instead of my PC monitor. Luckily I had a DVI-to-VGA adapter lying around so I could connect the PC monitor to DVI instead. This restored the boot menu to the PC monitor.2. My monitor is a Dell S2209W and the text was slightly fuzzy at first, even after the drivers were installed. Definitely readable, but headache-inducing. I was almost sure I would have to return the card when I hit 'Auto Adjust' on the monitor. That fixed it!3. I usually install only the drivers, and no additional software (such as install managers, control centers, etc.) With this card, I had no option to skip the control center / install manager. I have manually disabled the install manager from start-up, but I would have much preferred a clean driver-only install. The drivers are also huge in size compared to ATI, and there are 5 drivers in total.Overall, I would recommend spending a little more to get a GT 430 instead. Ideally I would get the GT 440, but it needs too much power: GT 520 - 29W, GT 430 - 49W, GT 440 - 65W

4Tricky installation. Sound card issues
By Rich Mc
Everything seems to be working OK now, but the installation of this card was problematic. Here's why: After installing the EVGA GeForce GT 520, I lost the onboard audio to my HP desktop (running XP Pro). In the sound resources of the Control Panel, the NVIDIA High Definition Audio became the default and my Realtek High Definition Audio disappeared. Solution: If the onboard audio is set to "Auto" in the BIOS, the motherboard will automatically disable the onboard audio if it detects another audio device (in this case the NVIDIA) in your computer. If you change your onboard audio setting to "enable" this will not happen, and you will get your sound back. I did have to reinstall the Realtek driver.Price from Amazon was great and shipping was very fast.

5Happy with Purchase!!
By dirkkid360
Update 06/14/12: Still going strong! I liked it so much that I bought another one to put in a friend's computer I was fixing. Worked like a charm!!! Definitely impressed.Update 04/29/12: I had this graphics card for a couple of months now and I have to say I am impressed. Remember, I do not use this card for gaming so I cannot test that aspect but I can tell you it handles any kind of video I try to throw at it. I was so happy I bought it for another computer of mine (also not used for gaming). This product replaced a 2008 (3 year old) VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB GDDR5 PCI Express Video Card 900244 in a 2007 (4 year old) Gateway Desktop PC. I originally had the VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4870 for mid-range gaming (Crysis, Far Cry 2, Battlefield 2) but I no longer use this computer to game. So when that video card started failing (bright pink/green pixels all over my 24" Gateway FHD2401 monitor), I bought the EVGA GeForce GT 520 1024 MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 DVI/HDMI/VGA Graphics Card, 01G-P3-1521-KR.The card arrived in 2 days (I'm a Amazon Prime Member) for the crazy price of $48.27 minus a mail-in rebate of $10 for a grand total of $38.27. My local Best Buy wanted $55.98 for it plus I had to wait 2-5 business days to get it since they did not have it in stock so Amazon was the clear winner in my decision making. The video card is 5.7 inches long which fit in my desktop perfectly considering I had up to 8 inches for a component in my PCI-E slot.Installation was extremely easy:Prepare your desktop computer. Unplug your monitor, mouse, keyboard and other devices from the desktop computer tower. Leave the tower plugged into the surge protector. Lay the tower on its side and remove the cover. If possible, work on your desktop computer in a non-carpeted area to reduce static electricity.Find a free expansion slot for the graphics card. If this is the first time you have removed the cover, you will probably see several free slots. You may need to remove an exterior slot cover to make room for the card. This will expose the connection ports on the graphics card to the back of the desktop computer. Remove the graphics card from its packaging, holding the video card by its edges. Never touch the sides of the video card or you may damage it with static electricity from your body. Press the graphics card gently but firmly into the expansion slot. If the graphics card requires an additional power supply, connect it now using the user manual provided with the card.Install drivers and software for the graphics card. Plug your monitor, keyboard and mouse into the desktop computer and turn it on. Your graphics card usually comes with a CD for installing this software. If it's not included, you may need to download the software from the manufacturer's website. Consult your user manual to learn how.Test your installed graphics card. After installing the graphics card software, you may need to unplug your monitor and plug it directly into the graphics card port in the newly exposed expansion slot. Follow instructions in your user manual to check your desktop computer settings. You should be able to check your computer's list of installed hardware to confirm the installation, usually labeled under display adapters. Play a high resolution video or game to test out your new graphics card settings. Adjust them according to your user manual.
