The RocketRAID 2642 is a high-performance SAS RAID solution, delivering reliability to demanding data-intensive applications such as tiered storage environments (Disk-to-Disk backup), security and surveillance, video editing, and digital content creation. Support for both SAS and SATA 3Gb/s drives on the same controller maintains configuration optimization for performance based on the characteristics of SAS and SATA drives available today.

I planned to install a 2-disk RAID 1 (mirrored) on two free internal SATA ports using Windows 7 built-in disk management utility. However, for reasons I could never quite pin down, Windows choked on the two Hitachi Deskstar 3K7000 2TB drives I was using. After trying everything to get them configured, I changed course and instead located this PCI Express card from Highpoint, which provides 2 internal SATA and 2 external eSATA ports, all running at 3.0 Gbps. This is a 4-channel card, so you can run all 4 ports simultaneously. I also have an external WD My Book Studio II, so the external ports on this card are a necessity.The card comes with two combo SATA power and data cables for the internal drives, but no eSATA cables, so you'll have to buy those separately. There's a clearly written short user's guide that covers the basics of installation. There's a CD with driver files, but you should instead download the latest versions at Highpoint's website. They've got all the bases covered, with versions for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2008, Vista, and Win 7, as well as Mac and several flavors of Linux. There's also a drive management utility that lets you check drive status and configure your RAID from within the OS. First-time configuration is handled through a BIOS-level utility that is accessed by pressing Ctrl-H when you boot.The user interface for the drive configuration utility is simple and cleanly designed. I think you'd have to try really hard to goof up when configuring--the utility clearly steps you through the whole process. From plugging the card in to starting to copy files to the new mirrored RAID, it took about 20 minutes start to finish. Everything is working smoothly, and I'm getting about 70 MBps sustained transfer rates between the internal RAID and the WD eSATA drive.No complaints at all about this unit. Another plus is Highpoint's well-organized website at www.highpoint-tech.com. This is my first purchase of one of their products, and I'm sure I'll be back for more.

I have had an awful experience with a RAID controller (in this case, RocketRaid 2200, NOT THIS PRODUCT) on my mac. I had a RAID1 setup for 1TB HDs and had to remove one to check a file. After this one file on one HD was modified, I reinstalled the HD. Ran the RAID controller web software, which noted a mismatch on the two HDs. I clicked "Verify." Many hours later, I had two HDs that the software said were fixed and identical, but now NEITHER ONE COULD MOUNT on the mac. The software messed up both, though it may have made them identical. I contacted "support" once a day via their website. (They refuse to offer phone support or even a chat support). Their response was, essentially, 1) try to fix it yourself and 2) we have no idea what our software product (the web management software) does during the verify process because the people who designed it are not around any more!! I am disgusted and I am through with Highpoint products. The true value of a company is judged when something goes wrong with their products. Highpoint is valueless!!

I purchased this RAID Controller to install 2 SAS Seagate Cheetah T10 15K 300GB Hard drives running RAID0. The card installed flawlessly, after the drivers were installed I tried to install an OS (Win7)on RAID0 (seeing 600GB available) it was a no go. Went to HighPoints web site and Downloaded the newest BIOS and its utility to flash the BIOS. Flashed the BIOS to v1.4 (it comes with v1.0)loaded Win7 and run CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2. Results: Read 183.0 MB/s Write 181.8 MB/s :) Yeah, I'm Happy!
