I looked at a lot of different adapters, and ultimately decided on this one. A little more expensive, but I wanted a digital adapter. I was concerned about other items as well, since there were a lot of comments about watching video on the monitor using this kind of adapter. Well, video playback through this device was as smooth and as clear as through the primary monitor. The video I watched was through iTunes (an MP4) and from RealPlayer (Big Brother live feeds) -- although the live video was a little more pixelized. I would buy this again.

First, there is no problem with this particular StarTech adapter. My only criticism of it is that it would be nice to have a longer and/or removable USB cable.The adapter works, though it required at least one reboot to provide 32-bit color and resolutions higher than 1024x768. The problem is that whenever my computer attempted to go to a screensaver or wake up from standby, there was chaos with the displays. For one thing the display connected to this adapter defaulted to mirror the primary display rather than extend the desktop and never remembered the extend setting. Windows became confused, causing me to have to repeatedly reset display settings for the USB adapter and my primary (DVI) and my secondary (VGA) monitors. Once set, it would work until the next time the screensaver came on or the computer went to standby. This is more a fault of Windows than this adapter, but still made it too problematic for regular use. At one point after coming back from the screen saver, all three monitors flickered and changed settings for several minutes until I finally forced the computer to restart.I found after buying that all these USB video adapters seem to incorporate DisplayLink chips and use DisplayLink drivers. This StarTech has better specs than most others. However, the Lenovo adapter uses the latest chip and has even better specs. I would recommend skipping installation of the CD you receive in the package and going straight to DisplayLink's web site to download and install the latest drivers.To sum up, this adapter (and presumably others based on DisplayLink chips) work. But I found that Windows Vista frequently became confused about the display settings and required some time to get everything set correctly again. I just don't think this is worth the trouble. I would recommend this only as a last resort if you have no other options.

I'm coming back to Amazon to buy my second USB2DVI adapter. It works just as good as the advertising claims.On an older notebook I'm now running two 19" external monitors and the difference between the the one on my VGA and USB port is indistinguishable. Actually the USB2DVI is more convenient as the USB cord is more flexible and can use any USB port, compared to the problems associated with hooking up a heavier monitor cable to your only VGA port.I do stocks, desktop publishing, and YouTube videos without any problems, gaps, or degradation (I don't do high-end games however.)As a note, after buying my first one I learned the hard way that it does NOT work with the 64-bit version of VISTA (like a lot of things.) Their online tech support worked great, and they confirmed it's compatible with XP and the more common 32-bit VISTA, but not VISTA 64-bit. So rather than returning it, I called my older XP notebook out of retirement and my multi-monitor system was up in running in no time.But I know since it's USB based, I can now upgrade to a less expensive desktop computer and still run a multi-monitor setup. Buying a USB2DVI is money well spent!
